That is not bad luck, it is the format. A pre-built kit has no walls to glue, so the icing in the box is there for decorating rather than for building. It has to squeeze out of a pouch after months in a warehouse, which means it is mixed soft, and soft icing lets a gumdrop creep down a sloped roof overnight. The house is fine. The decorations are on the board by morning.

The fix costs about two dollars and five minutes. Make a half batch of proper royal icing, use it for anything that has to stay put on a slope, and keep the pouch from the box for fine piping and colour. Beyond the icing, the trade-offs are straightforward. Pre-built kits are the fastest of the three formats and the only one with no failure mode: nothing can fall over because nothing has to stand up. Two names that used to sit on lists like this are worth striking off. Bed Bath & Beyond closed its physical stores in 2023 and now trades online under new ownership, and Party City closed all of its stores in early 2025, though its products have since reappeared inside Staples. If you are searching for one near you, timing matters more than the shop. Gingerbread is roughly a six week retail season.
