An Oreo gingerbread house is not gingerbread at all. It is a chocolate cookie house kit sold under the OREO name by Create-A-Treat, with walls and a roof made from crunchy Oreo flavored cookie, white creme flavored icing, real Oreo and Mini Oreo cookies, and a bag of candy. The main 2026 box, the E-Z Build Cookie House Kit, weighs 26.5 ounces and was $15.86 at Walmart.com on 29 October 2026, which works out to about 60 cents an ounce.

We have not built this year’s box in our own kitchen, and where that matters we say so. What we did do, on 29 October, was check every Oreo house listing we could find at Walmart, Amazon, Kroger, Target, Michaels and Five Below, read through the one star reviews to see what actually goes wrong, and line the kit up against the other boxes we have covered. Below is every Oreo house on sale this season and its price per ounce, what is in the box, why so many arrive broken and what to do about it, how hard it is to build, and how to make an Oreo house from scratch if the kit is sold out.

What the Oreo Gingerbread House Actually Is

It is a cookie house kit with chocolate cookie panels in place of gingerbread. Everything else works like a standard kit: pre-baked pieces, a pouch of icing to glue them, and candy to decorate. Nothing needs baking.

Oreo’s version hit shelves in October 2019. FOX 13 reported it spotted at Big Lots and CVS that month for between $10 and $13.49, with a mini version alongside it, in a box of pre-baked chocolate cookie pieces, pre-made icing, Oreo cookies, Mini Oreos, fruity gummies and candy jewels. The format has stayed close to that ever since. What has changed is the range: there is now a big house, a mini house, a four-house mini village, a pre-built house, and Halloween castles.

Who makes it matters for one practical reason. Create-A-Treat is not an outside licensee: Mondelez, which owns OREO, took a majority stake in the Toronto baker Give and Go in 2020, and Create-A-Treat is reported to be a Give and Go brand. Create-A-Treat makes a long line of character kits, and the Oreo house shares their trays, icing pouches and assembly style. If you have built one of their Minions or Hershey’s houses, you already know how this one goes. We cover the rest of the Create-A-Treat range on its own page. This page is about the Oreo boxes only.

Why do people go looking for it? Because a lot of children do not like gingerbread. They like Oreos. A Walmart reviewer put it simply last December: her grandchildren “do not like the gingerbread ones.” That one line explains most of the demand for this kit.

Every Oreo House Kit on Sale for 2026, Priced by the Ounce

The E-Z Build house is the one to buy. It is the cheapest Oreo box per ounce that was actually in stock when we checked, it is the biggest, and it comes with a tray that holds the walls. Here is the full line-up as we found it on 29 October 2026.

Oreo kit Size Price seen 29 Oct 2026 Per ounce Where, and stock

Oreo gingerbread house kits price per ounce chart, E-Z Build 60 cents up to the Mini Cookie House at about $1.80

Three things stand out once the prices sit side by side.

  • The small boxes cost far more per ounce. The Mini Cookie House works out at about three times the E-Z Build price per ounce. You are paying for the box and the instructions, not the cookie.
  • The Mini Village is the most expensive way to buy Oreo cookie, and still the right box for some families. Four small houses means four children each get their own, and that ends a particular kind of argument.
  • The Five Below price is not what it looks like. A $2.50 tag on a 14.6 ounce box with no stock anywhere reads like a leftover markdown, not a 2026 price. Shopper posts in late October showed Five Below’s mini cookie house kits at $5, so expect that range when the holiday stock lands.

Where to Buy an Oreo Gingerbread House This Season

Walmart is the reliable place right now. On 29 October it had the E-Z Build house in stock, shipped and sold by Walmart.com, with delivery the next day to the address we tested. The other stores were thinner.

  • Walmart. E-Z Build house at $15.86, in stock. The Mini Village showed $26.97 but was out of stock, and the Mini Cookie House and Pre-Built house had listings with no price, which usually means only marketplace sellers are offering them. If you want more of the context, Walmart’s gingerbread house shelf has every kit they stock this year.
  • Amazon. The Mini Village at $34.99 and a two-pack of one Oreo house and one Sour Patch Kids house at $26.06, sold by Amazon. The two-pack listing does not give a weight, so we could not price it per ounce.
  • Kroger. Lists the 30 ounce Oreo Holiday Chocolate Cookie House Kit, but on 29 October it was unavailable for pickup and delivery at the store we checked and no price was shown. A Google result showed $12.99, which we could not confirm on the Kroger page.
  • Target. A search for Oreo cookie house kits returned no Oreo house on 29 October, only Oreo cookies and other brands’ houses. Holiday stock was still arriving in late October, so check again in November.
  • Michaels. Halloween Oreo kits only on 29 October, the DIY Halloween Cookie Kit and the Spooky Castle, both $9.99 down from $19.99. No Christmas Oreo house yet.
  • Five Below. A Build Your Own Cookie House Kit, 14.6 ounces, listed but unavailable. Worth a look in store from mid November.

The timing lesson goes back to the first year. In 2019 one food blogger wrote that she had read the new Oreo kit was already sold out in October. You do not need to buy in October this year, because Walmart has stock, but if your heart is set on the Mini Village, the out of stock tag is already up.

What Is in the E-Z Build Box, Piece by Piece

Going by Walmart’s listing for the 26.5 ounce E-Z Build Cookie House Kit, the box holds:

  • Crunchy pre-baked Oreo flavored cookie pieces for the walls and roof
  • Icing, which other Oreo listings describe as Oreo creme flavored
  • Oreo cookies, including Mini Oreos
  • Assorted candy
  • An E-Z Build tray, the base with channels that hold the walls upright while the icing sets

The listing calls it shelf-stable and says no baking is required. The Mini Village adds Christmas light candies, mini jellies, Christmas quins and a bag of Mini Oreos, and Walmart lists that kit as certified kosher.

The tray is the part most people underrate. On a flat plate, four walls and two roof panels have to be held by hand until the icing grips, which is where most kit builds go wrong. The channels in an E-Z Build tray take that job away. It is the reason we would buy the big box over the mini house even for one child: the mini house is smaller, but it is not easier.

What the box does not include is enough icing for a heavy hand. One 2022 reviewer on the low end of the scale complained that the only real Oreo in the box was “two packs of cookies.” Plan to add a bag of candy per child, and if you want icing that holds like cement, mix a half batch of royal icing that sets firm before you start.

How the Oreo Kit Compares With Gingerbread Kits by the Ounce

By weight, the Oreo house is one of the dearer kits on the shelf. At 60 cents an ounce, it costs more than any of the gingerbread boxes we priced this season. You are paying a few dollars for the Oreo name and the chocolate cookie.

Kit Size Price Per ounce
Costco Woodland Gingerbread House Kit, pre-built 62.8 oz $13.99 22 cents
Trader Joe’s gingerbread house kit 26.4 oz $9.99 last posted About 38 cents
Create A Treat Hershey’s Large Cookie House, chocolate cookie 34.4 oz $15.86 46 cents
Target Hearth and Hand Winter Manor 54.6 oz $28.49 52 cents
OREO E-Z Build Cookie House Kit 26.5 oz $15.86 60 cents

The fairest comparison is the Hershey’s house, because it is the same idea from the same maker: a chocolate cookie house rather than gingerbread. At Walmart it sells for the same $15.86 and weighs 34.4 ounces, so it gives you about 30 percent more house for the money. If your children simply want chocolate and are not attached to the Oreo name, that is the better buy.

Oreo gingerbread house kit at 60 cents an ounce compared with Costco, Trader Joe's, Hershey's and Target kits

If price per ounce is the whole decision, Costco’s woodland cabin at 22 cents and Trader Joe’s A-frame box at about 38 cents both beat it easily. But price per ounce is rarely the whole decision with this kit. Nobody buys an Oreo house because it is cheap. They buy it because the child at the table will actually eat it.

Picture a family with two children, one who loves gingerbread and one who will not touch it. One Costco cabin is the cheaper afternoon, but half the table is decorating something they will not eat. One E-Z Build house at $15.86, shared, comes to about $7.93 each, and both of them pick the roof candy off at the end. That is usually the better $16.

The planner below does the sum for your own table. Choose the box, the number of children and whether they share, and it tells you how many to buy and what you are really paying per ounce.

Why So Many Oreo Kits Arrive Broken, and How to Avoid One

Breakage is the biggest complaint about this kit, and it is mostly a shipping problem. On Walmart's E-Z Build listing, 12 percent of the 393 ratings were one star on 29 October, and when we sorted the reviews by lowest rating, most of the top ones said the same thing: the pieces were broken when the box was opened. "Every single piece was broken," one reviewer wrote in December 2025. "Arrived broken," said another the year before.

The cookie is the reason. Oreo flavored panels are thin and crunchy, more like a wafer than a dense construction gingerbread, and the same reviewer who found every piece broken said they did not feel as sturdy as normal gingerbread houses. A thin crunchy panel snaps where a thick chewy one would bend.

The good news is the rest of the reviews. The same listing averages 4.2 out of 5, two thirds of the ratings are five stars, and one five star reviewer wrote that she had been nervous to order after reading about broken boxes and both of hers arrived intact. So the kit itself is liked. The risk sits in the trip to your door.

That gives you two ways to buy, depending on how much time you have:

  • If you are buying in person or by store pickup, check the box before you leave. Press gently and tilt it. A loud rattle of loose pieces can mean a broken panel inside. Choose one that sounds solid.
  • If you are ordering for delivery, order at least a week before you plan to build, so there is time to swap a broken box. Do not order it two days before a family visit.

And if you open it and something is cracked, most breaks can be fixed. A split roof hides under shingles. A cracked wall becomes the back wall. Only a box with several broken pieces is worth sending back. Pick what you found below and you will get the fix in order.

General repair guidance from how cookie houses are built and from the complaints buyers post on the E-Z Build listing. It is not a promise the house will hold, and a store's return or replacement policy is the first call for a box that is badly broken. Nothing you click is saved or sent anywhere.

Say you open the box the night before a playdate and one roof panel is in two pieces. Ten minutes with icing on a plate, half an hour of drying while you clear the table, and the roof goes on with the crack running down the slope. A row of Mini Oreos covers the line. By the time anyone else sees it, it is a shingled roof.

How to Build the Oreo Kit Without the Walls Sliding

Build it in this order, and give the walls time before the roof goes on. The E-Z Build tray does a lot of the work, but the icing still needs to grip before it carries weight.

  1. Knead the icing pouch in your hands for a minute or two before you cut it. Pouch icing separates sitting in storage, and kneading brings it back together. Snip a small corner first. You can always make the hole bigger.
  2. Pipe a thick line of icing into the tray channels, then stand the four walls in them, pressing each one in and holding it for about a minute.
  3. Run a second bead of icing up the inside of each corner where two walls meet.
  4. Wait at least 30 minutes before the roof. This is the step everyone skips and the reason most roofs slide.
  5. Ice the top edges of the walls, set both roof panels, and hold them for a minute. Then ice the ridge.
  6. Decorate the walls first, then the roof. Split Mini Oreos in half and press them into the roof icing in overlapping rows for shingles, which is the same trick Oreo's own kitchen recipe uses.

Expect the whole build to take most of an afternoon with children, less on your own. The waiting is longer than the building.

How Hard Is It to Build, by Age

It is an easy kit. On our graded list of gingerbread house kits, the Create-A-Treat Oreo Chocolate Cookie House sits at number 10 with a B grade, rated easy and suited to ages 5 to 12. That rating is our own and is based on the kit as it was sold last season. Here is how that plays out by age.

  • Under 5. An adult builds the house. The child decorates the walls once the icing has set. Keep the candy in a shallow bowl, because the bag will go everywhere.
  • 5 to 8. They can stand walls in the tray with help and do all of the decorating. Do the roof yourself.
  • 9 to 12. They can build the whole thing alone if they follow the waiting time. The roof is the one part worth watching.
  • Teenagers and adults. The kit is quick for you. If you want a project, skip to the from-scratch section below.

Making an Oreo House From Scratch Instead

If the kit is sold out or you want something bigger, there are three ways to build an Oreo house at home, from easiest to hardest. All three use a stiff icing as glue, which is the part not to skimp on.

1. Graham cracker walls with Mini Oreo shingles. This is Oreo's own recipe. Their Honey Maid Holiday Cookie Houses, updated on oreo.com on 19 October 2026, use 10 graham crackers broken into squares, 14 Mini Oreos split in half as roof tiles, a cup and a half of ready-to-spread white frosting, and 24 mini Swedish Fish, and it makes two small houses. Oreo lists it at three and a half hours, most of that drying time. It is a graham cracker house with an Oreo roof, and it is the easiest way to get the look for less than the price of a kit.

2. Homemade chocolate cookie panels. In 2019, the food blogger behind KendellKreations built a whole Nordic village from her own Oreo style chocolate cookie dough after reading that the Oreo kit had sold out, rolling the dough, freezing it and baking the panels, then assembling everything with royal icing made from meringue powder. It is a real baking project, a day rather than an afternoon, and the result is a house you will actually want to eat.

3. Oreos as decoration on any house. The simplest version of all: build a gingerbread or graham cracker house and use whole Oreos as a path, a chimney, windows or a front door, with halved Minis on the roof. If the point is Oreos, not chocolate walls, this is enough.

Which one is yours depends on the time you have. With an hour and young children, use the graham cracker version. With a free Saturday and a teenager who likes baking, make the dough. There are plenty of other things to build a house from if neither suits.

Who Can Eat It: Allergens, Gluten and Calories

Treat the Oreo kit as containing wheat and soy, and as possibly containing milk and eggs. That is the allergen statement on Walmart's E-Z Build listing: "Contains Soybean, Wheat. May Contain Milk, Eggs." The CONTAINS line on the box is how US packaging declares the nine major food allergens the FDA requires on labels, and it is the line to read before anyone eats the roof.

Oreo gingerbread house kit nutrition facts and ingredients panel listing contains wheat, soybean, may contain milk, eggs
Photo: Walmart

So the answer forks by who is at the table.

  • If the issue is gluten or wheat, the kit is out. The cookie panels are made with enriched wheat flour, going by Kroger's ingredient list for the 30 ounce kit, and nothing you remove changes that. Gluten Free Oreos exist and work well as decoration, which is the basis of the flat house idea in the next section. For a full house, look at a certified gluten-free kit instead.
  • If the issue is milk or egg, the kit does not list either as an ingredient but carries a may contain warning, so it depends on how strict the allergy is. Read the box you buy, because labels can change between seasons.
  • If the issue is gelatin, check the candy bag. Gummies are where it usually hides.

Then there is the nutrition panel. Kroger's listing for the 30 ounce kit splits it into 27 servings of one twenty-seventh of the kit, at 140 calories and 14 grams of sugar each. That is about 3,780 calories and 378 grams of sugar for the whole house. Nobody eats the whole house, and the serving split is not a target. The FDA bases serving sizes on how much people actually eat, not on how much they should. In practice, these houses get a few pieces of candy eaten on the day and a lot of cookie left on the board in January.

Oreo Gingerbread House for Kids Who Don't Like Gingerbread and Gluten-Free Families

The Oreo house is mostly bought for one kind of child: the one who will not eat gingerbread. Before you pick a path, think about who is at the table and what they can eat, because that decides between the kit, a homemade house and something flat on a plate.

For kids who don't like gingerbread

This is the reader Five Below writes its product copy for, describing its Oreo kit as "perf for anyone who doesn't love gingerbread." The Walmart reviewer who bought for her grandchildren had found out the hard way that the two of them did not like the gingerbread kits, and had no idea an Oreo house existed until she went looking. If that is your house, buy the E-Z Build box and let them eat the walls. Skip the Mini Cookie House, which costs about three times as much per ounce for a smaller build.

For gluten-free families and classrooms

The kit is wheat based, so a child with celiac disease cannot eat it, and that matters most in a classroom where everyone else has one. One Reddit poster with celiac disease remembered a school Christmas activity where classmates built houses from a premade Oreo kit, and the teacher gave them a piping bag of icing and Gluten Free Oreos to build a flat house instead. It worked, but the poster remembered the different set-up years later. If you are the parent or the teacher, give the gluten-free child the same thing as everyone else: a gluten-free kit or a graham style house made from certified gluten-free crackers, decorated with Gluten Free Oreos, which Target sold in a 12.08 ounce pack for $5.69 on 29 October.

How Long an Oreo House Lasts

An unopened kit keeps until the best by date printed on the box. Walmart's listings describe the kits as shelf-stable, so it can sit in a cupboard from October to December without any special care.

Once built, it is a decoration first and a snack second. Thin cookie panels tend to soften as they pull moisture from the air, so a house that has stood on the counter for a couple of weeks is unlikely to be crunchy. If anyone plans to eat it, eat it within the first few days. If it is for show, keep it out of direct sun and away from the kettle, and it will stand through the holidays.

Oreo House Questions People Ask

Does the Oreo house come already built? The E-Z Build box does not. You stand the walls in the tray and add the roof yourself. Walmart also lists a 25.03 ounce Pre-Built Cookie House Kit with the walls already up, but on 29 October it showed no price and could not be bought, so for now the E-Z Build is the one on the shelf.

Is the Oreo house kosher? Walmart's listing for the Mini Village says that kit is certified kosher. The E-Z Build listing does not say either way, so look for the certification mark on the box itself.

Is the Halloween Oreo castle the same kit? It is the same idea in a different shape. Michaels had the Oreo Spooky Castle at $9.99 on 29 October, down from $19.99, and it disappears from shelves once Halloween is over. If you see one cheap in November, it will build a perfectly good Christmas house with green and red candy.

How big is the finished house? None of the listings we read gave finished dimensions, so we will not guess. The weight is the better guide: at 26.5 ounces, the E-Z Build box is about the same weight as the Trader Joe's A-frame and well under half the weight of the Costco cabin.

Can two children share one? Yes, if each owns a side. Decide before anyone opens the candy who has the front and who has the back, and tip the candy into two equal piles. Three children on one Oreo house works only if they are old enough to take turns.

Is the Oreo Gingerbread House Kit Worth Buying

Yes, if the people decorating it will eat chocolate and not gingerbread. That is the whole case for it. On every other measure, size, price per ounce and sturdiness, a gingerbread kit or the Hershey's chocolate house does better. Buy it when:

  1. At least one child at the table will not eat gingerbread but will eat Oreos.
  2. You can buy the E-Z Build box in a store or by pickup, and check it before you leave, or order a week ahead.
  3. You are happy to pay about 60 cents an ounce, roughly $16 a house, for the Oreo name.
  4. Nobody at the table needs a gluten-free house. If they do, build the from-scratch version with gluten-free crackers instead.

Get those four right and the afternoon goes the way you pictured it: a house that stays up, children who are proud of it, and walls that actually get eaten.
